EU Type Approval vs. Individual Approval
There are two paths to getting a non-EU vehicle road-legal in Europe, and which one applies depends on whether the exact model has already been certified for the European market.
EU Whole Vehicle Type Approval (WVTA)
If the manufacturer has already type-approved that exact model for the EU market — increasingly common for Chinese and Korean brands selling officially in Europe — the vehicle comes with (or can obtain) a Certificate of Conformity (CoC). With a valid CoC, the vehicle can be registered in any EU member state without further technical testing.
Individual Vehicle Approval (IVA)
If the specific vehicle variant hasn't been EU type-approved — common for grey-market imports, domestic-market-only Chinese models, US/JDM-spec vehicles, or older imports — it needs individual approval. Every country runs its own national process, through its own designated technical authority, assessing safety systems, emissions, noise, and (for EVs) battery and powertrain safety against UN/ECE and EU standards.

Homologation is the process of certifying that a vehicle meets a country or region's safety, emissions, and technical standards before it can be legally registered and driven. Do all imported Chinese cars need individual approval?

What's the difference between homologation and customs clearance?
They're separate processes. Customs clearance is about paying import duties and VAT to bring the vehicle into the country; homologation is about certifying the vehicle meets technical and safety standards to be registered and driven. Both are required for imported vehicles, and DriveSino supports both.
Do electric vehicles need additional homologation steps?
Yes. EVs require additional certification for battery safety (UN Regulation No. 100) and electric powertrain safety (UN Regulation No. 136), on top of the standard safety and technical checks.
